Lemang Recipe (Glutinous Rice cooked in Bamboo)

Lemang is a traditional Malay dish made from glutinous rice, coconut milk, and salt, cooked in a hollowed bamboo stick lined with banana leaves.

Ingredients 

Main Ingredients

  • 500 g Glutinous rice
  • 400 ml Coconut milk
  • 1 teaspoon Salt

Instructions 

  1. 1. Wash the glutinous rice thoroughly and soak it in water for 2 hours.
  2. 2. Drain the rice and mix it with coconut milk and salt.
  3. 3. Line the inside of the bamboo tubes with banana leaves.
  4. 4. Fill the bamboo tubes with the rice mixture, leaving some space at the top.
  5. 5. Place the bamboo tubes upright over a slow fire and cook for about 2 hours, rotating occasionally.
  6. 6. Once cooked, let the lemang cool before slicing and serving.
